Are My Gifts the Help-People Type?

Editor’s note: Throughout July, we’re hosting 31 Days with St. Ignatiusa month-long celebration of Ignatian spirituality. In addition to the calendar of Ignatian articles found here, posts on dotMagis this month will explore the theme of “people for others.”

Thomas Vozzo, CEO of Homeboy Industries, disputes a mindset that claims, “My gifts are not the help-people type.” He explains that we are all called to be in relationship with other people who may not be like us. “It doesn’t take a special skill to sit across the table, break bread, talk to somebody, and share life experiences.”

Vozzo sees that call to relationship and using our gifts to help other people as ways to live the Call of the King, which moves us to action.

Watch the video in which he explains rule 54 of his 55 rules we should break. Vozzo’s complete list is in his book, The Homeboy Way: A Radical Approach to Business and Life.

  1. Beautiful. Thanks Tom. Moving closer to the margins is a win-win situation. Out there in the margins Jesus is waiting for any daring guy to make the first move.
