Today is the feast day of St. Paul Miki and his companions. The Jesuit Miki and 25 others were martyred in Japan in the 16th century. Fr. Michael Depcik tells the story in sign language and verbally in the below video.

Today at Mass when Father spoke of Paul Miki I was reminded of the expression, the devil is in the details. It may not be what the originator meant when he said this, but for me that describes the daily small small choices, or martyrdoms, that we constantly experience. The mundane, seemingly meaningless, choices that actually give us the opportunities to either follow His Way or choose to quietly sin by assuming that the choice is so small that it doesn’t matter. And yet like the martyrs, it is these choices that provide the opportunites to grow in our faith, and our love, for Him who loved is so much that He died for us. If the devil is in the details, perhaps too that is where we will find our salvation.
